Cave Temples of Dambulla - an enchanting sight
Sri Lanka is a country of many religious influences. Although the country was plagued with over 2 decades of civil war which started as a result of racial conflicts between the Sinhalese (the majority) and Tamils, the religious similarities between the two major religions are unavoidably evident. Most Sinhalese Buddhists are known to worship and seek the guidance and protection of various Hindu gods who are of Tamil origins. Such similarities however cannot be seen in relation to some of the other religious beliefs that form the local community such as Muslims and Christians with whom ethnic disputes have been surprisingly yet thankfully less prominent.
The Golden Temple of Dambulla or the Cave Temples of Dambulla is one of the most important religious sites for Buddhists in the country that was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Known around the world as the largest and most well preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, the Cave Temples of Dambulla is one of the most significant religious sites in the island. These magnificent temples are constructed within stone caves which are said to have been carved out of solid rock. Although 80 separate temples have been discovered in the region five of them are adorned with magnificent paintings and colorful sculptures.
The Cave of the Devine King or Devaraja lena consists of ancient Brahmi inscriptions which narrates the story of the origins of these prayer rooms. This cave also has a Buddha statue which is approximately 14m in length that has been replenished a few times over the years. The Cave of the Great Kings is the largest of the five caves and is home to 40 seated statues and 16 standing statues of Buddha himself. Among the statues in this cave are the two standing statues of God Vishnu and God Saman. God Vishnu is known as a Supreme God according to the teachings of Vaishnavite Hinduism. The Great New Monastery is another cave temple located here where visitors will be able to see 50 Buddha statues. The other two caves that belong to the complex are relatively smaller in size and were also used as prayer rooms.
