Some Basics of Hook Writing
Let me try and provide you some sort of theory behind what makes a hook work or not. When listening to a song what is the #1 thing that you remember most?
You’ve guessed it, the hook, also known as the chorus. The hook is, most often then none, the one element that makes a song memorable. I find myself at times humming the hook of my favorite song throughout the day.
For rappers writing a catchy hook can sometimes seem like magic or any songwriter at that. Before we start-ask yourself what a hook is.
A hook can be a short stanza or verse making it a musical or vocal portion of a song that is a transition between verses. That’s like a technical definition.
There are no length requirements to how long a hook is supposed to be. It could be a few short words or a few big sentences. As a general rule of the thumb the hook is usually equal to or shorter than eight bars.
You can try flipping the script on them and make the hook longer than the verses or the verses shorter than the hook.
As a rapper we want the hook to be remembered in the mist of all the verses in your song. The hook becomes the transition between verses in every song you hear.
This repetition of hook is a contributing factor to why hooks become so catchy. Sometimes the hook comes first but in other circumstances the verse starts before the hook.
Until next time..Good Luck and Much Success!!!
