Basically, A Stress Fracture Is Something That Happens Over Time
Stress fractures are amongst those injuries that can happen without warning. They are basically fractures of the bone that occur in a variety of conditions. Stress fractures are pretty much a sports injury. The danger with them is that someone could have a stress fracture and not realize it until it is too late. There could just be a lot of pain that could be mistaken for something else, like shin splints.
Basically, a stress fracture is something that happens over time. It isn’t like other kinds of fractures which happen because of a noticeable impact. Marathon runners, for example, are prone to stress fractures. The constant pounding on the pavement, the fact that your muscles become fatigued, these are all things that can cause stress fractures. The muscle is responsible for absorbing the shock of an impact. When the muscles get tired they cannot do this anymore. That is when stress fractures start happening. The bone ends up fracturing from the impact. And it doesn’t just happen with runners. It can happen during any activity. The one common variable is that your body is getting overworked.
So what do you do if you have stress fractures? Well first, you need to be properly diagnosed. Things like x-rays can tell if there are stress fractures. However, sometimes the x-rays are inconclusive. Another way to diagnose is by getting a bone scan. This is more reliable and accurate. Sometimes stress fractures are so minute that they may not show up on a traditional x-ray. The current techniques for bone scanning, however, are very accurate.
There is no set treatment for stress fractures. The bone does not need to be set in a cast or anything like that. Depending on where it is you might need a brace or sling. In general, they heal on their own in about six weeks or maybe less depending on the person and the location. You should wait until the stress fractures heal before you resume the activity but there is no need to use crutches or anything like that unless there is a lot of pain. If the pain is intense your doctor may prescribe a pain killer to make you comfortable.
