Fun Exercises You Can Do With Your Kids

If you have kids, you may feel guilty leaving them to go work out at the gym. Who says you have to go to the gym to get a great workout? Your kids can provide an excellent source of cardio inducing fun. Here are just a few ideas.

Jump

Remember all of those silly rhymes you used to sing while you jumped rope? Why not teach them to your kid while you have a jumping rope contest. Who knows, maybe you'll learn a few new rhymes from of the next generation while you work up a sweat.

Hop

Grab a piece of chalk and head to the sidewalk for a game of hop scotch. All of the hopping and bending will make your legs burn and your heart race.

Shoot

If you have an older child, challenge him or her to a game of one-on-one basketball. Chasing your little dribbler may be harder than you think.

Dance

Dancing can be a great cardio exercise. No matter if you're playing Dance Dance Revolution or just rocking out to the Ipod, grab your tot and boogie.

Run

Kids love races, so why not challenge your child to a sprint? Set a goal, such as the end of the block or twice around the house, then take off. If your tot starts to lag, pick him or her up and carry them the rest of the way. The extra weight will burn more calories and is sure to get a giggle or two from your little one.

Can't Afford A Gym Membership? - Consider These Alternatives

Buying a health club or gym membership can be quite expensive as anyone knows who has joined a gym in January. There's a good chance you are paying more than at any other time of the year. Getting in shape is always a good idea, but in order to make sure it is your body and not your wallet that's getting the workout, consider the following advice on gym membership and low cost exercise alternatives.

Trial gym membership - It's a good idea to start with a trial pass to give yourself a chance to be honest with yourself about how motivated you are. Fitness clubs may offer one-week or one-month memberships on a trial basis. Remember, the harder the club is to get to, the easier it is not to go. Visit at least two or three easy to reach club close to your home or office and choose the one that's best for you. Don't sign a contract right away by someone pressuring you to sign on the dotted line, no matter how attractive the membership package. Read the fine print on the contract to determine your cancellation and automatic renewal clauses. Most clubs offer an opt-out clause for three days after signing in which you can cancel the contract without a penalty. Never sign a contract that includes interest charges.

If you absolutely can't afford a gym membership and your home is not exactly well-stocked with the latest home exercise equipment, Garretson suggests these low cost alternatives.

Outdoor Exercise - Instead of wasting your money on a gym membership, why not buy a $100 road bike that will give you as much exercise as you want. Or you might buy a good pair of even less expensive running shoes and take the dog for a walk.

Exercise Tapes - Here's another great alternative to an outrageous gym membership: Rent or buy some exercise tapes or DVDs, turn on the TV and start exercising. It's like having your own personal trainer at home. You can do Yoga, step aerobics, weight training routines or whatever else the trainers suggest.

Used Exercise Equipment - Consider purchasing used exercise equipment available from online merchants specializing in reconditioned machines. Check garage sales and your local paper for used, or maybe even "never-used" equipment that is still in top shape. It's better to put your money into your own home fitness gym instead of a gym membership.

Join A League - No gym membership is needed when you join group activities through community centers, churches and work such as bowling, softball, volleyball, soccer and flag football. They offer a great way to exercise while having fun with your friends.

Orange Celebrity Blog Round-Up 14 January 2010

It’s been a few days of tattoos and surprising party guests, and no mistake. First, David Beckham showed off his new body art following a game between his current team AC Milan and arch-rivals Juventus. The tat in question? A not-especially-cheery image of a blood-stained Jesus, apparently based on a painting called The Man of Sorrows. It’s a tribute to Becks’ late granddad though, so we’d best not be too snarky.

Still on interesting skin-based ink, news emerged that truly talentless twins John and Edward Grimes aka Jedward are hooking up with none other than Vanilla Ice for their debut single (a version of ‘Ice Ice Baby’, natch). Lest we forget, Vanilla has the phrase “wide open” tattooed across his fingers – no, we’ve no idea why either…

And the party surprise? None other than Cheryl Cole, who rocked up looking all fabulous like (with hubby Ashley) to Take That supremo Gary Barlow and wife Dawn’s 10th wedding anniversary bash at a London hotel. In fact, Chezza’s Girls Aloud bandmate Kimberley Walsh was there too, along with several other of Gary’s Comic Relief Kilimanjaro climb chums.  Ain’t no mountain high enough, even when it’s freezing out, apparently!

Speaking of Mrs Cole, we actually felt sorry for her when she was spotted out with her hair in such a mess.  Celebrity crises don’t usually upset us, but in this case we’d like to send out our sympathies to Miss Cole on occasion of this minor tragedy.  Ashley seemed to be amused by the whole incident, as if it wasn’t as significant as his wife made out – shame on you Ashley.

Cheryl Cole’s hair normally looks full of body with not a strand out of place.  She even has body guards looking out for her hair, as seen by the photos taken when she left Gary Barlow’s wedding anniversary party.  Well she is the face of L’oreal, so needs to make her hair looks prefer - because she’s worth it.  But then, aren’t we all?

Climbing Tool

Is there a tool to catch spiders alive at home? Usually, I kill them. But I would prefer to catch them alive, open the window and throw them away. So I can spare their life, just in case it's someone from my family who is reincarnated. I did it a few times with a paper, the spider climb on the paper then I open the window and shake the paper. But it's not always convenient. Is there a better tool? Place a glass over them, gently slide a thin piece of cardboard under the glass, and voila!

Resistance Climbing

Toning my lower body...help!? Ok so I've lost about 20lbs and I am really happy with my upper half but I still have a bit of toning I'd like to do for the back of my thighs and I would like to shape my calfs. I usually go to the gym 3-4 days a week, and I run 1.5-2mi at about 6.0mph-6.5mph, and then I walk for about a .5mi-1mi or more at about 4.0-4.5mph, and sometimes I'll jog after both running and walking, for about .5mi. I then do about 35-40mins on the crosstrainer doing hill climb at resistance 6-12, and the cross ramp between 10-20. Been doing this for a month now and I do feel my muscles on the side of my thighs getting harder but I still have some flabbiness on the back of my thighs and my legs are still not shapely. I eat pretty good, usually about 1800calories at most a day but on weekends I tend to go a little above, one day just being a cheat day. How long till I see really good results or what else can I do to help tone my lower body? Lunges are REALLY good for the thighs, they will tone the ucky flabbiness you hate. Also step ups on stairs help a lot. You are right about the cheat days they are really good for you and help you lose weight faster. You can probably expect results in about a month, but for now when you are sore and tired remember how you will look in a month! Hope i helped : ) Good Luck

Dramatically Change Your Garden with a Climbing Rose

William Baffin

There is no investment, for less money, that will so dramatically change the appearance of a garden or landscape than a properly placed climbing rose. You can probably recall any number of beautiful magazine images of sunny, rose-covered arbors or a rose-covered lattice framing at a home's front door. Climbing roses are extremely versatile garden performers. You can choose to let them artfully climb vertical structures, leisurely tumble over a picket fence or carefully train them on horizontal fence rails to create a narrow hedge. This week we are featuring a climbing rose - William Baffin - the most reliable of all the medium to deep pink climbers.

William Baffin, a Canadian developed variety that is just about the best of the renowned Explorer series of roses, has been proven in thousands of gardens over many seasons for its colorful reblooming, low maintenance requirements, excellent disease resistance, unusual cold hardiness and salt tolerance. You will be rewarded with big color from clusters of up to 30, double, strawberry-pink 2 1/2 inch blooms that are moderately fragrant. Clusters of small orangeed hips follow in the autumn and remain into winter, until relished by the local bird population. Beautiful, glossy, green foliage that is totally resistant to diseases, acts as a backdrop for the blooms. William Baffin matures at 10-15 feet, making it ideal for a trellis or arbor. Although bred in Ontario Canada, William Baffin performs equally well as far south as Florida.

Planting and Care

• For best results plant in the fall or spring. Fall planting works particularly well with William Baffin.
• Plant in full sun for best blooms, but will tolerate partial shade.
• Plant in well-drained, compost enriched soil.
• Mulch well the first winter.
• Pruning and shaping, when necessary, should be accomplished after the initial spring bloom.
• Fertilize with Rose-Tone monthly from early spring until late summer.
• Hardy in Zones 4-9.

Kettlebell Military Press Variations: Use the Same Weight, Increase the Difficulty

The kettlebell military press is a great exercise for building overall shoulder strength. It takes the shoulder through a wide range of motions starting from the rack position up to lockout. As in most kettlebell exercises, the kettlebell military press can be altered to allow for greater challenges with the same size kettlebell. Why start using a heavier kettlebell before you master the seated pistol grip press with the weight you have?

As with all kettlebell exercises, make sure that you perform them in an area where you don't mind dropping the kettlebell. The following kettlebell military press variations are listed in order of difficulty; master each kettlebell military press before moving to the next one. If you master each one of these kettlebell military press exercises, I guarantee you will be stronger and you'll easily transition to a heavier weight.

Kettlebell Military Press Variation: Basic

The kettlebell military press is usually the first overhead kettlebell exercise people learn. It's a strict press where you keep your body as square as possible. Do not use a side bend to get the kettlebell overhead. If you notice yourself doing so, switch to a lighter kettlebell. Get the kettlebell into the rack position with your elbow tucked into your side, resting on your hip. From there, press the kettlebell straight up. Keep your core tight and make a fist with your other hand. Perform each kettlebell military press repetition at the natural pace that the weight will allow.

Kettlebell Military Press Variation: Palm Press

The next exercise is the palm press. Switch to the palm press as soon as you can perform 10 or more reps of the basic kettlebell military press. Pick up the kettlebell from the ground and position the ball portion in your palm. From there, press straight up. Keep your eye on the kettlebell at all times. This a great exercise to work the shoulder without being able use the leverage the kettlebell provides when it sits on your forearm. Keep your body tight throughout the duration.

Kettlebell Military Press Variation: Pistol Grip Press

The next progression is the pistol grip press. This is one of the best grip and forearm workouts you can get with a kettlebell. To start, clean the kettlebell to the rack position and carefully position it with the other hand so that the kettlebell is upside down. Hold the kettlebell in place by crushing the handle. Keep your eye on the kettlebell at all times, then press it overhead. Keep your body tight and make sure you do this in a place where dropping it is ok. The last thing you need is a contest between your head and the kettlebell if you lose your grip.

Kettlebell Military Press Variations: Seated Presses

The next step in kettlebell military press series is to perform the same kettlebell military press exercises, but now sitting on the floor. This requires a greater core flexion and takes away any bounce or help the legs might provide. This means the stress is almost completely put on the shoulder for each kettlebell military press repetition. Make sure you are not leaning against anything when you performs reps. The weight will feel heavier in a seated position.

To get the kettlebell into place, put it in front of you and pick it up with the hand you are going to press with. If the kettlebell is too heavy to muscle up with the pressing arm, assist with your free hand. Keep your back straight, tighten your core, and press. Go through the basic kettlebell military press, palm press, and pistol grip press exactly how you performed them standing.

Remember, kettlebells aren't just about lifting the most weight possible, it's about learning efficient ways to exercise, and then mastering those methods. Enjoy the process, don't rush it, and before you know it you'll be achieving greater gains then ever before.
